The Cape Cod has always been a design object first. Since its debut in 1991, the case that Henri d'Origny drew, a square set within a rectangle, has been read as one of the more original silhouettes in modern watchmaking. D'Origny, who also designed the Arceau in 1978, took his cue not from the equestrian world Hermes usually draws on but from the links of an anchor chain. Martin Margiela's double-tour leather strap, added in 1998, did the rest to turn it into an icon. For 2026, as Monochrome reports, Hermes has pushed the collection somewhere else: the Cape Cod Titanium is the sportiest version the family has had.
A harder edge
The shape is faithful to the original, but almost every surface has been reconsidered. The new case is 41mm long and 33mm wide in titanium, and where earlier Cape Cods were polished and rounded, this one is angular. Satin-brushed top surfaces meet bead-blasted flanks, and the result is technical and nearly monochromatic rather than dressy. Titanium keeps the larger case light on the wrist, and water resistance is now 100 metres, enough to treat it as an everyday watch rather than a formal one.
The dial is finished in black that reads closer to dark grey in the metal. A textured centre sits inside a satin-brushed outer ring, giving the face some depth without adding colour. Hermes has kept d'Origny's Arabic numerals, applied here as rhodium-plated markers filled with Super-LumiNova, because the typography is half the point of a Cape Cod. The one deliberate accent is a bright orange central seconds hand. A small date window sits at 6 in the same typeface as the numerals.
The movement and the straps
The watch runs the Manufacture Hermes calibre H1912, an automatic built through the brand's long partnership with Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier, which Hermes part-owns. Visible through the sapphire caseback and decorated with H logos across the bridges, it beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour and holds about 45 hours of reserve, with a free-sprung balance.
The bigger change is what is around the case. The leather straps that the Cape Cod has worn for three decades are replaced by integrated rubber, offered in black, Bleu Abysse, orange or Jaune de Naples, with a quick-change fitting that lets the owner swap them. It is a small mechanism, but it is the clearest signal of where this version is aimed. The Cape Cod that Margiela wrapped twice around the wrist in soft leather is now a watch you are meant to rinse off and put back on.
