Grand Seiko showed the SBGZ011 at Watches and Wonders in April, then let it sit. The watch reaches boutiques in Europe and North America in July 2026, which is the point at which a piece like this stops being a press image and becomes something a collector can actually try to buy. There are 50 of them.
It belongs to the Masterpiece Collection, the small run of watches built by the Micro Artist Studio in Shiojiri rather than the main Grand Seiko lines. The studio sits in the same part of Nagano as the Tateshina waterfall, and the waterfall is the whole idea of the watch. Grand Seiko has taken to calling it the mystic waterfall, which is marketing, but the engraving underneath is not.
The engraving does not stop at the dial
Most decorated watches carry their craft on the dial and leave the case plain. The SBGZ011 does the opposite of stopping. A hand-engraver has cut a pattern of fine, directional lines meant to read as moving water across the silver dial, and then carried the same pattern outward, over the platinum bezel and down the flanks of the platinum case, so the watch looks engraved from every angle rather than just head-on. The hour markers are 14k white gold, set into the engraved field, and the reported case dimensions are 40.0mm across, 45.2mm lug to lug and 9.6mm thick.
That thinness matters, because the movement behind it is one of the flattest high-end Spring Drives Grand Seiko makes, and the case is built to show it off through a transparent screw caseback with the serial number engraved alongside.
Caliber 9R02, the manual-wind Spring Drive
The 9R02 is the hand-wound Spring Drive that the Micro Artist Studio reserves for its top pieces. It holds 84 hours of power and is rated to roughly one second a day, or 15 seconds a month, which is the accuracy figure that has always made Spring Drive difficult to argue with. Grand Seiko also quotes 4,800 A/m of magnetic resistance and splash resistance, so this is a dress watch that will survive being worn rather than a movement in a vitrine.
None of that is new to the 9R02. What is new is the setting, and the fact that a movement this considered is now wrapped in a case and dial that took an engraver far longer than the mechanism took to assemble.
Two straps, one for the theme
The watch ships on two straps. One is a plain black crocodile, the conservative choice. The other is a KYOTO leather strap finished with metallic accents in black, blue and silver, made to look like splashing water, which ties the strap back to the dial in a way that is either charming or a step too literal depending on your taste. Both fit the same platinum case.
Price and availability
The SBGZ011 is limited to 50 pieces worldwide and priced at USD 84,000 or EUR 86,000, arriving at Grand Seiko boutiques in North America and Europe from July 2026, having launched earlier in Japan. At that money it competes with hand-finished watches from makers whose names carry more weight in a European saleroom than Grand Seiko's does.
